Petrol Generators and open fires (including charcoal)

Why petrol generators, open fires and charcoal BBQs are not permitted

For safety reasons, petrol generators, open fires and charcoal barbecues are not permitted anywhere on site at Folk in a Field Festival.

The festival takes place in an open rural grassland environment where dry ground, long grass and changing weather conditions significantly increase the risk of fire spreading rapidly. Petrol-powered equipment, naked flames and hot embers present a high risk of accidental ignition, which could lead to uncontrolled grass fires, serious injury, damage to property, and danger to life.

Under UK health and safety legislation — including the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, and guidance issued by local authorities and fire services for temporary outdoor events — the event organiser has a legal duty to take all reasonably practicable steps to reduce foreseeable risks. Allowing individual fires, fuel-powered generators or charcoal BBQs would introduce risks that cannot be safely managed across a large public campsite.

This policy is therefore in place to:
-
Protect festival-goers, staff, volunteers and performers
-
Reduce the risk of grass and wildfires
-
Ensure compliance with licensing, insurance and fire safety requirements
-
Allow emergency access routes to remain clear and safe at all times

Designated, professionally managed catering and power arrangements are provided where required, and all fire safety measures are agreed in advance with the relevant authorities.

Failure to comply with this rule may result in equipment being confiscated or removal from site, in order to protect the safety of everyone attending the festival.
